Technical note
Some online publications mention dates much earlier than the 18th century as the supposed origin of washing machines. There is even a reference to a 1691 patent as being the first washing machine. The document describes it as a device for wringing, squeezing, and assisting in washing – probably a wringing or draining mechanism – but not a machine with agitation, paddles, a drum, or any form of mechanized washing. In other words, it's a patent related to the act of washing, but it's not a washing machine.
These references are based on inaccurate interpretations of manual washing utensils – such as boards, mortars, or wringing rollers – which lack internal mechanisms and therefore cannot be classified as machines. Technical historiography recognizes as the first washing machines only the mechanized devices documented from 1767 onwards, when the first designs with controlled agitation or rotation appeared . Before that, there are no reliable records of equipment that performed any form of mechanized washing.
